Putting your opponent on a Range(Pt 1)

There is a great process that was introduced in the book Professional No-Limit Hold ‘Em: Volume 1 by Matt Flynn, Sunny Mehta and Ed Miller and it gives  a very useful framework that allows you to determine what your opponents are likely holding and getting the most out of your hand against them. It is called REM and stands for Range, Equity, Maximize. Some useful short quotes on REM.

1. Range: What range of hands is your opponent most likely holding?

The best way to assign a hand range to your opponent is to use the HUD stats from tracking programs like PokerTracker 4. You should combine that with a good HUD setup. We think we have the best HUD available for PT4 here at ZoomRush as it allows you to quickly put your opponent on a range which is super useful in the quick action of fast fold poker. Our 6 max HUD is here. We are currently developing a Heads Up HUD.

2. Equity: How much equity do you have against that range?

The amount you can expect to win in any poker hand based on the percent chance you have of winning multiplied by the size of the pot. It is a synonym of "expected value." For example, if a pot was $1,000 and a player had a 70% chance of winning it, he would have equity of $700.

3. Maximize: What’s the best play you can make?

Every time the action is to you, it's an opportunity for you to make the perfect play. Thinking about poker that way is great for your game.- Phil Galfond

Lets expand on each concept for a more comprehensive understanding.

1. Range: What range of hands is your opponent most likely holding?

What do typical hand Ranges look like?

To give you an idea of what typical ranges look like, click on the TABS below.

You can use the following charts in real-time to quickly put your opponent on a range of hands.

Armed with that information the next question we need to ask ourselves is

How can we tell what our opponents range is?

thud

This might seem like an unashamed plug for our HUD, nevertheless we believe our HUD is the best available for putting your opponent on a range quickly which is obviously what is needed in Zoom, Rush and other forms of Fast Fold Poker. Check out the screenshot to the left which can be brought up instantaneously with a mouse over with our HUD.

10percent

Lets assume we are playing in a 6 Max Zoom game and the opponent with the above statistics opens from under the gun. His statistics indicate that he opens 10% in this position so his range would be similar to this chart on the left. This is a huge piece of information to have on your opponent. We can also see that he folds to a 3 Bet from that position 25% of the time and never 4 bets. So we could 3 bet this opponent and he will fold 25% of the time and never 4 bet, so 3 betting this opponent when he raises from UTG is definitely worth considering.

In Part 2 we will expand on  ”Equity: How much equity do you have against that range?”

Updates to Zoom Hud

We have made a few changes to our Fast Fold Poker 6 max HUD. If you look at the screenshot below you may notice some slight alterations.

thud_changes_v1_1

The main changes to note are the number of hands that the villain has played in each respective position is displayed and is also color coded. Hands over 100 are white and gets progressively lighter the lower the number of hands played. So a quick glance at the above tells us that we have a sufficient number of hands on this specific opponent in all positions so that we can be quite confident on putting this particular player on an accurate range in all positions pre-flop.

There are some minor cosmetic changes such as the amount villain has “won/lost is coded “green/red. Obviously green is a positive $ amount and red is a negative amount.

You can read further information and watch a video about this HUD here.

The price is ONLY $19.95

Heads Up Cash Suggested Ranges

In the tradition of Heads Up Sit and Go Hyper Turbo Poker Charts and Strategy we are pleased to announce that we have developed Heads Up Fast Fold Poker Suggested Ranges @100bb for Cash Games. These charts are presently available for free and all you need to do is sign up to our free membership to be able to access them. The readless tables are based on population tendencies and we will be expanding on these charts in the future to include different opponent types. So no matter if you are playing an aggro reg or a passive nit you will be able to make the most optimal decision available in Heads Up Cash Games.

Not only do you gain access to the charts but you also gain access to suggested strategies to deploy.

Example:

Readless you should open as many buttons as possible until you see what your opponent does. Even opening 100% of buttons is a viable strategy against an opponent who will fold too much out of the big blind. If your opponent starts to 3 bet a lot you will need to adjust by opening less, 4 betting or even experimenting with opening different raise sizes to keep your opponent guessing.–ZoomRush Strategy tips

Sign up to our free membership to access these charts.

You will then be able to access Heads Up Fast Fold Poker Suggested Ranges @100bb for Cash Games charts.

Heads Up Cash Suggested Ranges

50 NL Heads Up Zoom Strategy

So I have been playing a ton of 50 NL Heads Up Zoom lately and would have to say categorically that I love it. I used to play a lot of Hyper Turbo Heads Up and hated playing Heads Up Cash because of all the bum-hunting going on. I would sit a reg at HU-Cash and he would usually play a few hands and then sit out if he thought you had any idea of what you were doing. Now however with Heads Up Zoom you are playing against a pool of players with nowhere to hide.  Good stuff.

Initially there didn’t seem to be too much action and sometimes there were only 5 or 6 players in the pool but that seems to be slowly changing and I have played sometimes where there are about 60-80 players in action at one time.

huzoom_screenshot2 Action in Heads Up 50NL Zoom is climbing steadily

 A strategy of some sorts

In my opinion the differences in strategy between heads up cash and heads up zoom should be pretty similar. The obvious difference is that you are up against a different opponent each time so it is critical that you have a hud, and a good one at that. The hud that we have developed here at zoomrush has been specifically designed with that in mind.

When I am dealt a hand in the small blind I am min-raising and will try and open close to 100% of hands. Before that however I quickly glance at my HUD to see  what type of opponent I am up against. If someone is folding a lot in the big blind I am definitely trying to open 100% of buttons.

tight_bb Opening 100% of hands against this guy is probably a good idea as he is only playing 39% of hands from Out of Position.

You need to be able to make decisions fast in these Zoom games and a quick glance at the above opponents stats we see 39 in green, meaning he is very tight out of position so a button open is almost mandatory.

If you take a look at our Heads Up Fast Fold Poker Suggested Ranges @100bb article it will be a good starting point for you to start constructing ranges for these games both in and out of position. We hope to be making more charts available soon for different opponent types.

6 Max Zoom Poker Hud

We are pleased to announce the availability of a Zoom Poker Hud, which can also be used for any other fast fold Poker site. Although it has been custom made for fast fold poker it may also be used effectively in most 6 max and Full Ring games.

Check out the video below to see the Hud in action on Rush Poker at Full Tilt.

Please note that this is only available at the moment for use with PokerTracker 4.

 THUD(The HUD) Explained

Below you can see the “visible hud”. What we mean by this is that it the hud that can be seen at all times. The problem with displaying a lot of information on your hud is that it crowds the screen and can become a huge distraction when you are trying to concentrate on playing a hand of poker.

thud_smallThe “visible hud”

As you can see it displays a minimal amount of information but with a quick glance it is adequate for an initial decision on the hand. If more information is needed , a simple mouse over the “visible hud” displays the “extra hud” which is displayed below.

thud_bigThe “extra hud”. A simple mouseover and voila.

The “extra hud” once it is visible displays a lot more information and breaks down the pre-flop stats positionally. It also displays some other useful information such as WWSF, WTSD and W$SD along with the villian’s post-flop tendencies on all streets.

Correct color coding is also a huge part of having a useful hud as it can be a huge benefit for a quick assessment of your opponents especially when multi-tabling.

We will have a more detailed description of the color coding soon but for now if a quick overall generic statement could be made about the colors that you see on the left it is that Yellow is extremely loose, Green is loose, the Blues are average, Red is aggressive  and Orange extremely aggressive. If we look at our example here we can see that this particular opponent is extremely loose in Early Position playing 33% of hands and hence the green color coding.

Fast Fold Poker HUD

In this short video we showcase a new HUD we have in development which is being specifically designed for fast fold poker games. This is for use at the moment for PokerTracker 4 only. We hope to have this HUD available for sale within the next week.We feel that the problem with most huds is that they take up too much of your screen due to the mass of information being presented and consequently in designing this we have tried to show a minimum amount of information but making more available with a simple mouse-over.

We hope to have both a free version and a paid version available soon.
